New project: "Documenting Russia’s war against Ukraine: The challenges of living archives for historical knowledge production (LivArch)"
On 1 May, the project "Documenting Russia's war against Ukraine: The challenges of living archives for historical knowledge production (LivArch)" starts at the IEG, duration: 2024-2027.
The war in Ukraine has led to three significant changes in historical research: the emergence of new types of community-driven archives, the generation of archival material in real time and the increased reliance on digital sources due to the inaccessibility of physical archives. LivArch aims to address these challenges, explore digital preservation practices and establish forms of shared authorship between scholars and activists as archive creators.

The project is being carried out as part of the "Leibniz Cooperative Excellence" funding programme under the leadership of the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe in Marburg. In addition to the IEG, the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (Luxembourg), the Center for Urban History L'viv (Ukraine), the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (USA), Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Philipps University Marburg and Justus Liebig University Giessen are also involved.
Ian Kisil Marino, a former DH Fellow, will be working on this project as an IEG staff member. We are already looking forward to his co-operation.
